The “ecological footprint” is an overall indicator for sustainability coined by researchers already in 1994. It is a metaphor for the consumption of resources depending on our planet’s productive area. This means that the ecological footprint shows how many hectares of area our planet must provide in order to supply resources for an individual person, a company or a country as well as to absorb their waste. In contrast to the CO
2
-footprint, in order to calculate the ecological footprint not only CO
2
-emissions are taken into consideration, but also other effects on the environment, such as waste and sewage.
